Miquita Oliver is the TV presenter best known for her time hosting T4.

She began presenting in 2001 alongside Simon Amstell on Channel 4’s Popworld.

The 37-year-old had a career spanning the 2000s and has since worked in radio, hosting shows on Radio 1 and 1Xtra.

There are many surprising details about her personal life, including famous family members and an ordeal in which she was forced to file for bankruptcy aged just 27.

Miquita’s godmother is none other than actress Amanda Mealing.

The 54-year-old actress is best known for playing Connie Beauchamp on Casualty, although she recently announced she’s taking an “extended hiatus” from the show.

In 2011, Miquita had to file for bankruptcy shortly after losing his job presenting the T4.

She was unable to pay the £174,514.47 bill for unpaid taxes.

At the time, Baker Tilly Restructuring and Recovery said: “HMRC applied for Miss Oliver to be declared bankrupt for unpaid taxes amounting to £174,514.47.

‘Due to the fact that this amount was not collected by the due date set by HMRC, a bankruptcy order was issued to Miss Oliver in respect of the amount mentioned on 11 November 2011.’

Miquita opened up about the experience, saying, “I went bankrupt and haven’t told anyone. I had a drawer that I hadn’t opened that looked like this one from the bankruptcy letters. I remember I took all the letters, put them on that balcony, and just set them on fire.

“Like a real lunatic, I was just like, this isn’t happening at all. Just do this. ‘Cause I thought I’d been there and nobody knew and nobody was going to find out and that I would be able to get back on my feet.

“Obviously when it came out in the papers, that’s when I was more angry for mum because I felt really bad that everything was really public and I felt like that must have been a really awful thing to have your daughter in the papers making such a big mistake.”

Since then, in December 2013, she presented Young, British and Broke: The Truth about Payday Loans on BBC Three in which she spoke about her ordeal.

She said: “At 17 I was making money that I didn’t know how to handle and before I knew it I owed thousands of dollars to the taxman. I just felt like I couldn’t breathe and I was sinking in. I was so scared about my future and didn’t tell anyone about it for two years.

“When I was declared bankrupt, I felt like I was in a financial mess that I would never get out of.”

After her mum found out what happened, she said: ‘My mum calls him ‘The Humbling’ and it was humbling because it’s true that it drags you down and makes you look at everything, you have to look at yourself.”

Miquita and her mother, Andi Oliver, will appear together in a new BBC show: The Caribbean with Andi and Miquita. They will meet relatives and discuss colonial days.

The show airs tonight (Sunday, January 23) at 9 p.m.
