From April 1, regardless of your supplier, you will pay more for gas and electricity. Almost all energy companies are increasing standard tariffs to the maximum amount allowed by the Ofgem price cap – £1,971.

This means that millions of gas and electricity bills are set to rise by 54% from April 1, which will put further pressure on household finances across the country. Here is the list of new rates that will be charged by 11 UK providers from next month, compiled by Money Saving Expert.

The UK government will pay £200 into each electricity bill payer’s account in October to help offset the price cap. This will be reimbursed from April 2023 for five years, as Manchester Evening News reports.

Payers of Council Tax bills in bands A to D, or those who already have a discount in Scotland, will receive a £150 non-refundable credit either to their bank account if paying by direct debit, or direct to their Council Tax account.

Contact your local council if you are unsure where the money will go, but check your council tax account online first.

If you don’t qualify for these supports and are on a low income, you may be able to get a crisis grant from your local council – find out more here.

You should also contact your energy supplier if you are concerned about paying your bills.
