Kirklees residents who don’t pay council tax by direct debit can now apply for the £150 energy rebate

Kirklees residents should now receive their refund within two weeks of a successful request.
Provisions are available for those who find it difficult to use the internet or fill in forms, and residents can call 01484 225331 for assistance in physically filling in the form. There will also be options available for those without a valid bank account.
Anyone who is having difficulty with their application is encouraged to contact the board directly for assistance; this can be done via the council’s website chat function or by calling the main switchboard on 01484 221000 and inquiring about the council’s energy tax refund.
At the time this application form goes live, over £14m of energy rebate has already been paid out to Kirklees residents who pay council tax by direct debit.
Direct debit payers have been able to receive their payments faster because a direct debit account can automatically process more of the checks needed, as well as the payments themselves.
Just under 95,000 direct debit payers had been confirmed eligible by early May and should now have received their £150 refund payments.
The council is currently in the process of contacting direct debit payers for whom problems have been reported during automated checks, who should receive a letter explaining the problem and how to resolve it.
Councilor Paul Davies, Cabinet Member for Business, said: ‘This refund will help people get through the current energy crisis and the resulting rising cost of bills, which have the biggest impact on households that had already struggling to get out.
“Over the past few weeks, we’ve worked very hard to make sure the municipal energy tax rebate application process works as smoothly as possible for everyone.
“It has been a huge job to ensure that this sum of money is distributed correctly, quickly and efficiently.
“Now that the application form is online, we should be able to get money into people’s bank accounts within two weeks of a successful application.
“At this point, we are happy to say that almost 95,000 people have now received their discounts.
“We have already paid out over £14m in energy rebate, and over the next few weeks we plan to pay out millions more.
“If you pay your council tax by direct debit and haven’t received your refund yet, don’t worry.
“It’s probably because a problem was reported during our automated checks, but that doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to your refund.
“The council is contacting anyone in this situation directly, and you should receive a letter explaining the problem with your account and how to resolve it.”
